Photo project!

I decided to try a year-long photo project to try being creative and get an excuse to use my camera a lot. If you're interested in following, I'm posting all my pictures on a separate blog, MeyerSnaps.

That's all I've got for today!

how to study for an exam

I have a difficult exam next week for Animal Behavior, and my teacher sent out an email suggesting ways to study over the weekend to make sure we are ready for it. Frankly, I think it's pretty awesome advice (and totally unexpected coming from him):

One of the best ways to learn tricky conceptual material like different levels of selection (DNA/gene, individual, group) is to force yourself to explain it on paper. Repetition is also important: read and re-read the material (e.g., pour youself a glass of wine some night and read through the first four chapters of Dawkins)

Oh yes, this strategy will be utilized.

Halloween photos!

Saw the Blanks on Friday night; it was awesome!! I even got to chat with them about Limerick and their show at Luther Hospital two years ago. I met Erin and Mo at the theater; my parents went to the show, but they weren't there for the meet and greet afterward.

So I dressed as Amy Pond and unbeknownst to me, another person was dressed as the Doctor! Made my day and I needed to get this picture! (my sonic screwdriver was provided by fellow Doctor Who fan, Erin, who's the nerd herd member on the right)

Annndd, the BEST crazy random happenstance I've ever seen on Water Street. Dr. Hammer and Penny randomly ran into Dr. Horrible outside of the Joynt. (oh, and Voldemort was nursing a beer inside). Best. Halloween. Ever!!

One week

I hope that you all have that classic BNL song stuck in your head now.

It's one week since Noah left, and we received his phone call the night he got to basic. Now we're all waiting for the letter with his graduation date and address so that we can send our letters to him (we actually have a few already). Life is slowly getting back to normal.

Of course, Halloween weekend is exciting especially in a college town. I'll be posting pics with the best costumes I saw very soon.

AND, best thing that happened: seeing the Blanks (Ted's band from Scrubs). It was a great show!! And the opening a capella group, the Innocent Men, were fantastic! I'm hoping to be able to make it to their CD release concert on Dec.10. The Blanks are the only "celebrities"/"musicians" that I have ever gotten to talk to and get their autograph. I even got a picture with the band; will be posting that later.

Now I'm getting back to reality and the huge pile of homework that accompanies it. *sigh*

Navy

Today my brother joined the Navy. Well, technically he's going to be sworn in tomorrow. But he left for the Cities today. We had our last family meal together until he's done with basic right around Christmas. We're all hoping his graduation date will be pushed ahead because of the holidays, but I've learned not to expect too much from the government in this regard. Today they even called and told my brother he had to leave an hour earlier than expected, which may not seem like much, but when you're trying to say good bye, an hour seems like a lot of time.

Our whole family is getting a lot of support from our church family. Many people of come forward telling us they were keeping us in our prayers--which is very comforting. God is watching over him, and from what I have seen, my brother's faith is strong.

The rest of my day has kind of been in recovery. I started out trying to keep busy, and then crashed. I honestly can't remember if I have homework due tomorrow or not. I know many families go through some kind of experience like this, so we are not alone. But its hard to believe that tomorrow or even a week or a month from today, my brother won't be downstairs, or coming home from practice. We'll all miss him so much, but we're also very proud of the path he's chosen to take.

Fruit snacks and car problems

I'm at that point in my life where I should be fairly mature and self-confident. When you're little, it's easy to think you'll have it all figured out by the time you're twenty, and your life will be pretty much in order. Occasionally, I'll get to a point where I feel like I can say "yes, I am an adult" and then go and do grown-up, independent things like buy groceries and within an hour revert back to my younger self by getting excited about finding dinosaur-shaped fruit snacks in aisle five. Bottom line, I am neither as mature or confident as I should be.

I've lived in the same town essentially my whole life, and that realization always makes me feel like I'm standing still. However, I spent 9 months of the last year travelling abroad through Europe and the southern United States. It was awesome. There was always that initial feeling of doubt and fear about being so far away from home, but it eventually faded. I began to feel really independent and in control of my own life. I could take on the world with nothing but my running shoes and my mix CDs.

Then I came home. Due to lack of funds, I'm living with my parents, and sharing a room with my younger sister. I feel like I've lost the person I was a year ago. My current summer job keeps me in the area, or in the backwoods of Minnesota. I'm very much ready to move on. But today, I had to go pick up parts to fix my car, and went into panic mode when I realized how large the margin for error is if I do this on my own. I need to have this car fixed in two weeks to pick up my boyfriend, who I miss very much, in Chicago. I would be sunk without my dad, who is awesome at fixing cars. So how far away can I actually live from my family? and is it more important to be on my own and fix the car myself, or go the more expensive, but easier route of paying a mechanic?

I don't want this blog to be uber-pensive and thoughtful. I'm actually kind of dorky and the exact opposite of a social butterfly. But I'll attempt at pulling this off, without too many Scrubs or Office references.
