Judge me all you want

Question: why is this still happening? Matt is gone, my sister moved out and school hasn’t started yet. I should be happy and relaxed, enjoying the last few precious moments of break before school begins.

Instead I’m stressed out like a maniac (not cool enough to be a bandit), worrying about finding a job, and moping for my boyfriend. My typical way to battle depressed feelings is the “shark” method, where I never ever stop moving or working on something whenever I’m not sleeping. Unfortunatley it isn’t working this time. If anything it's making it worse.

I wish I could make a thought cloud for all my worries and put them to good creative use.
I’m worried about finding a job this summer, finding housing, finding a job AFTER that job, earning money to visit Matt, is my brother ignoring me because I didn’t spend enough time with him before he left for six months, what if Matt breaks up with me when my job takes me too far away and another girl goes after him, am I becoming a social hermit, what if my GPA drops, why am I becoming the girl that waited instead of going out and seeing the world, why does is se too much, why do I feel like I can never get anything done, and what is the fine going to be for not replacing my front license plate because the bolts are rusted onto the old broken frame and I can’t get the new one on yet??
I want to just curl up in a little ball and wait for the storm to go away.

Allie Brosh's blog, which is awesome, and this post is very descriptive of what I'm thinking right now:

Literary Blog!

So unfortunatley, I have gotten caught up with final exams and the holidays and was forced to drop the photo snaps project. This is painful for me to admit, because I hate to actually give up on something, but there were greater demands placed on my time. Really, soon I would be working all day at school or actual work, and then come home to homework and at 12:30am realize that I still hadn't taken a picture all day. Hopefully I will undertake this project again when I have more free time.

Also, as soon as I tell people about these things, I tend to jinx them, which is why many of you may be surprised that this blog began this summer and I didn't publicize the link until many months later. I don't like to jinx things.

The main focus for the entry today is an exceprt for Angela's Ashes. I deliberately did not read this book before and during my stay in Limerick because I thought the depressing story could possibly give me misgivings about studying there. Well, I was wrong, this book is amazing and I have regretted my decision ever since. Especially because they had tours based around this book, how cool is that?!

Angela's Ashes is the autobiography of Frank McCourt and his experience growing up in Limerick, Ireland during the Great Depression. It is a very powerful book that made me appreciate all the blessings I have in my life. I wanted to share one of my favorite parts, because, well, because I felt like sharing it.

Background: Frank McCourt grew up in a traditional Irish Catholic household, where they were taught to go make confession to a priest and find out the penance they had to do to earn forgiveness. It's disappointing to see how he seems to know all the traditions of the church, but not the doctrine or scripture behind the teachings of the church. Often the priests are described as hypocritical or uncaring. But this example of McCourt giving confession caught my attention, and I hope that this was an actual instance in his life. He had been out many hours, sent by his mother to look in all the Limerick pubs for his father. He became so hungry, he stole fish and chips from a drunk man who had passed out on the side of the road. His guilty conscience drove him to the church to make confession.

Chapter 7

"Bless me Father, for I have sinned, it's a fortnight since my last confession." I tell him the usual sins and then, I stole fish and chips from a drunken man.
"Why, my child?"
"I was hungry, Father."
"And why were you hungry?"
"There was nothing in my belly, Father."

He says nothing and even though it's dark I know he's shaking his head. "My dear child, why can't you go home and ask your mother for something?"

"Because she sent me out looking for my father in the pubs, Father, and I couldn't find him and she hasn't a scrap in the house because he's drinking the five pounds Grandpa sent from the north for the new baby and she's raging by the fire because I can't find my father."

I wonder if the priest is asleep because he's been very quiet till he says,"My child, I sit here. I hear the sins of the poor. I assign the penance. I bestow absolution. I should be on my knees washing their feet. Do you understand me, my child?"

I tell him I do, but I don't.

"Go home, child. Pray for me."

Photo project!

I decided to try a year-long photo project to try being creative and get an excuse to use my camera a lot. If you're interested in following, I'm posting all my pictures on a separate blog, MeyerSnaps.

That's all I've got for today!

how to study for an exam

I have a difficult exam next week for Animal Behavior, and my teacher sent out an email suggesting ways to study over the weekend to make sure we are ready for it. Frankly, I think it's pretty awesome advice (and totally unexpected coming from him):

One of the best ways to learn tricky conceptual material like different levels of selection (DNA/gene, individual, group) is to force yourself to explain it on paper. Repetition is also important: read and re-read the material (e.g., pour youself a glass of wine some night and read through the first four chapters of Dawkins)

Oh yes, this strategy will be utilized.

Halloween photos!

Saw the Blanks on Friday night; it was awesome!! I even got to chat with them about Limerick and their show at Luther Hospital two years ago. I met Erin and Mo at the theater; my parents went to the show, but they weren't there for the meet and greet afterward.

So I dressed as Amy Pond and unbeknownst to me, another person was dressed as the Doctor! Made my day and I needed to get this picture! (my sonic screwdriver was provided by fellow Doctor Who fan, Erin, who's the nerd herd member on the right)

Annndd, the BEST crazy random happenstance I've ever seen on Water Street. Dr. Hammer and Penny randomly ran into Dr. Horrible outside of the Joynt. (oh, and Voldemort was nursing a beer inside). Best. Halloween. Ever!!

One week

I hope that you all have that classic BNL song stuck in your head now.

It's one week since Noah left, and we received his phone call the night he got to basic. Now we're all waiting for the letter with his graduation date and address so that we can send our letters to him (we actually have a few already). Life is slowly getting back to normal.

Of course, Halloween weekend is exciting especially in a college town. I'll be posting pics with the best costumes I saw very soon.

AND, best thing that happened: seeing the Blanks (Ted's band from Scrubs). It was a great show!! And the opening a capella group, the Innocent Men, were fantastic! I'm hoping to be able to make it to their CD release concert on Dec.10. The Blanks are the only "celebrities"/"musicians" that I have ever gotten to talk to and get their autograph. I even got a picture with the band; will be posting that later.

Now I'm getting back to reality and the huge pile of homework that accompanies it. *sigh*

Navy

Today my brother joined the Navy. Well, technically he's going to be sworn in tomorrow. But he left for the Cities today. We had our last family meal together until he's done with basic right around Christmas. We're all hoping his graduation date will be pushed ahead because of the holidays, but I've learned not to expect too much from the government in this regard. Today they even called and told my brother he had to leave an hour earlier than expected, which may not seem like much, but when you're trying to say good bye, an hour seems like a lot of time.

Our whole family is getting a lot of support from our church family. Many people of come forward telling us they were keeping us in our prayers--which is very comforting. God is watching over him, and from what I have seen, my brother's faith is strong.

The rest of my day has kind of been in recovery. I started out trying to keep busy, and then crashed. I honestly can't remember if I have homework due tomorrow or not. I know many families go through some kind of experience like this, so we are not alone. But its hard to believe that tomorrow or even a week or a month from today, my brother won't be downstairs, or coming home from practice. We'll all miss him so much, but we're also very proud of the path he's chosen to take.
